JSTS Lifetime Membership

Lifetime Membership Committee

The Lifetime Membership Committee (the “Committee”) shall be responsible for identifying and evaluating potential candidates that may be eligible to receive the honor of “Life Member”, as defined below.

The Committee should consist of at least 4 current JSTS Members, including at least 1 current Life Member.  All members of the Committee should have been members in the club for at least 10 years, and should have broad exposure to the workings of the club.  Membership on the Committee does not preclude someone from being nominated as a Life Member.

Life Member Guidelines

The objective of recognizing a Life Member is to acknowledge a member’s long-term contributions to the club.  In order to provide a measure of consistency in the evaluation process, the Committee should use the following guidelines in evaluating each candidate’s suitability for this honor.  Candidates do not have to strictly meet each and every guideline if the Committee feels that an exception is warranted.

  1. Candidates should be at least 70 years old.

  2. Candidates should have been a JSTS member at least 15 years.  The membership should be continuous unless a person had a good reason for lapsing.  In cases where records are not available to confirm a member’s longevity with the club, best efforts should be made to determine if they meet this guideline.

  3. Candidates should be a current member.

  4. Candidates should have made "significant contributions to the club" spanning a period of at least 5 years.  Not all contributions are equally significant.  The following examples are contributions that are not of equal significance:  lead one ride a year, be a board member, be an active board member, manage an event.

  5. Candidates should be a positive influence within the club.  This may include helping to promote cycling, and the values that the club stands for, such as safety, camaraderie, etc.

Life Member Vetting

All candidates should be properly vetted to determine if they meet the guidelines stated above (or if any exceptions to these guidelines are warranted).  The vetting process of any candidate should be done with a certain level of confidentiality to avoid situations where a potential candidate is not deemed to meet the criteria for Life Member.  The Committee may discretely reach out to other JSTS members to help evaluate each candidate’s contributions to the club and perception as a positive influence.  It is expected that each candidate nominated for Life Member will be a unanimous recommendation.

Generally speaking, the honor of Life Member should not be bestowed to more than 2 people in any given year.

It is expected that club members who are familiar with each candidate would overwhelmingly agree that they are deserving of the honor.

The candidate(s) nominated for Life Member will be presented to the Executive Board for unanimous approval.

Life Member Formal Announcement

Upon approval by the Executive Board, the Life Member may be announced at a general meeting, and will include a brief bio of the candidate.
