Tired of only biking on weekends during the summer? Tuesday and Thursday night rides during the peak season still not enough? Well, how about 5 straight days of biking around the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia? If this sounds like a great escape, then Bike Virginia 2010 might be just what you are looking for! Knights of the Golden Wheel – “The Shenandoah Expedition” – is the title of the 23rd Annual Bike Virginia (June 25-30, 2010), and you can read all about it here.
In prior years, over a dozen JSTS members have participated in each of these well-organized, well-supported rides, which are always capped at 2,000 riders. If we register as a group of at least 8 people, each person saves $20 on the registration fee, plus we save another $10 per person if we register by Jan 31, 2010 ($330 instead of $360). [Since the group application is being submitted on time, you can secure the same savings by joining after 1/31 - but don't wait.] SPECIAL BONUS THIS YEAR… every rider who registers before April 1, 2010 gets a free Bike Virginia bicycle jersey!!!
With regard to accommodations, there are options for camping (both indoors and outdoors in “tent city”), as well as hotels. In prior years when the hotel reservations were made, 4 rooms were booked (enough for 8 people… to get the discounted registration rate), and then we always had a couple of people that had to scramble and find an extra room at another hotel. This year we have reserved 5 rooms. It sounds like a long way off, but for those of you who have gone in the past, you know how early the local hotels become booked up….. so….. reservations are made.
If you are interested in joining our group, please let Rob Leitner know ASAP. He is holding 5 non-smoking rooms, each with 2 double beds. They are available on a first-come first-serve basis. So far, 3 rooms are taken. The other rooms are up for grabs!
P.S. - You can check out photos from a few of the prior trips here (2005, 2006, and 2008… the 2008 photos have never been seen before!). Be sure to check out the photos at Goshen Pass on Day 3 of Bike Virginia 2005… that’s what biking is all about! J
